City Receives $3.8 Million Federal Stimulus Grant

The City of Normandy Park has been awarded $3.8 million for the 1st Avenue South, Phase 2 Multi-modal Enhancement Project. The grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Federal Stimulus Package), which was approved by Congress and signed by President Obama in February. This project was selected for funding by the Puget Sound Regional Council, which selected the projects to receive approximately $78 million in Federal Highway Administration funding.

The projects selected, including the 1st Avenue South Project, are projects that PSRC considered to be ready to proceed, which will create employment and quickly put the federal stimulus dollars into the local economy. The City of Normandy Park expects to award a contract for project construction in early June with construction to begin shortly thereafter. The project completion date is tentatively set for December 2009.

The project improvements will consist of construction of sidewalks, bicycle lanes, street lighting, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, signalization and left turn lanes from SW 192nd Street to SW 200th Street. This section of 1st Avenue South serves Normandy Park Towne Centers, which will provide approximately 100,000 square feet of retail commercial space and over 5o new multi-family dwelling units when completed.
